I cleaned and separated my waste, now what?

I am glad you asked that question

It all depends on your personal situation

If you are in a very rural area, you would probably dump all your non-recyclables into a fire pit, your recyclables can be taken to a recycling facility or contact, your compostable waste can be placed into nearby composting heaps or fire pit.

City folk can place their recyclables and non-recyclables into the same refuse bin so that the individuals who come collect the recyclables does not need to rummage through it. You can compost all your compostables for your garden. In the flats you will need to make arrangements with some one who has a composting heap, or drop your food waste at one of b-double-i's pick up points.

You will start realising that your dustbin does not have a bad smell anymore and that you will get an unpleasant feeling the next time you see someone throw food or compostable waste into a general bin.

Even having a general bin should be seen as a no no.

So now you will start seeing how much of your waste has always been an alternative resource, you just didn't know yet.

Myself I used to have a piggery, where this all started.

I placed all the left over eatable or drinkable items into a, what we called 'varkie bakkie', the bines and cardboards were taken to to burning drum, so that the bone meal coming out could be added to the composting heaps, then I cleaned and put all my recyclables into one drum, and the others into another bin. These I dropped of at my local recycling center, and they were too happy to seperate the items for me so that they can sell the items off.

I could go on for hours and hours on how to do what where, but believe it would be best for all of us if it is rather handled on a personal level.

Please send through to us varias ways you currently reduce, reuse, or recycle, and send us any questions you might have on how to improve the waste systems you are currently using.

Goed Gaaf
